Summer is a great season for both dog and owner.Long warm days give way to mild evenings with long daylight hours, making the perfect conditions for walking. What could be better than a brisk morning walk or gentle evening stroll with your dog?Not only is a brisk walk good for your health, but it is also great for the dog’s health too. Buth the summer months can also bring with them a number of health hazards that you need to be aware of.
BBQ Parties
A BBQ is often the highlight of the summer. Whilst enjoying the outdoors many of us allow our dogs to roam free with us in the garden. However, a BBQ is actually quite hazardous to a dog.Your dog may not understand that the BBQ is hot until it’s too late. If your dog is lively and enjoys running around it could quite easily bump into the BBQ unit. Also, you need to be aware that human food might taste good to a dog, but it isn’t necessarily good for it.Your pooch may well love the taste of a grilled hamburger and will probably end up begging for more.Greasy human food offers your dog no nutritional or health benefits and your dog will always ask for more.Just make sure he has a full bowl of his favourite dog food close at hand – that should help to keep him happy. Bones are another hazard, so never let your dog eat chicken wings or pork chops.
Water
Water is an essential part of your dog’s daily nutritional routine. As the months get warmer it becomes even more important.Ideally, keep a bowl full of water close to your dogs feeding station and make sure it is full throughout the day. Always take water with you if you are going on a long trip with the dog.He will benefit from regular drinks and will certainly be thankful that you are quenching his thirst!
Dogs in Cars
Do not be tempted to leave your dog in a locked car for more than a few minutes, especially during summer.Cars can get really hot and your dog is at risk of dehydration or death if you leave him locked inside. If you have to take your dog out with you in the car make sure you take his lead with you so he can leave the car when you do. Failing that, leave him at home!
Animal Friendly Sun Screen
Like us, dogs can be negatively affected by the sun.If you know your dog is going to be out in direct sunlight for a prolonged period you need to invest in some dog friendly sunscreen. Pay close attention to those areas with little fur coverage, such as the nose and ears.
